The Bristol Sauce.

About us

The Bristol Sauce is a publication and collective of writers dedicated to making Bristol’s food scene the best it can be through honest, transparent and paid-for writing. And by paid-for, we mean we pay for all the food we eat, and we pay every writer for the work we publish. Simple. Read our style guide and manifesto to find out more.

For now, we’re sharing weekly restaurant reviews from a range of voices across Bristol, and a monthly news update. In the future, this could be a podcast, a magazine, an app - who knows.

What we do know is that independent food writing is really important. Please subscribe to support our work.

The Bristol Sauce was founded and is edited by Meg Houghton-Gilmour.

Write for us

We are always interested to hear from prospective food writers.

We’re especially keen to feature the voices of writers who are underrepresented in journalism, and food journalism in particular. These could be people who experience racism, people who identify as working class and people living with disabilities. You don’t have to have written about food before, and may not consider yourself a writer at all. You don’t necessarily have to write about restaurants; we are keen to hear ideas on all manners of food and drink as long as it is in some way connected to Bristol.

We pay all our writers a rate of £70 per review as long as it is publishable. We are aware this is not a very high amount — as our paying subscribers grow, our rate will too. The Bristol Sauce will not be a profit-making entity until everyone is paid well. We endeavour to give constructive feedback on all writing and support our writers in their endeavours to the best of our ability.

If you’d like to share an idea with us, you can message us on Substack, on Instagram (@the_bristol_sauce) or email Meg.
